Narrative

Note: Researching John Rudkin and wife Elizabeth

The birth year I had originally noted for John was taken from the census records with his wife and children from during his adult years, which noted him as two years older than his wife, giving him an approximate birth year of 1824. Looking more closely at the census records for his parents led me to notice that his age, as listed in the 1841 census, was given as eleven, with his sibling next closest in age (Charles) given as age nine. Since I had not reviewed any image of the original physical record, I had supposed this to be a possible transcription error, with the age misread as "11" instead of "17."

More critical review of the matter, though, suggested that he was not likely eight years older than his next sibling, and two years' difference seemed more reasonable. Additionally, if his parents' ages were reported correctly in the censuses - and it should be noted that they were consistent in their reporting over the course of several decades - then his parents Henry and Sarah would have been about sixteen and fifteen at the time of his birth, which also seemed unlikely. A birth year of about 1830 for John would have made the two of them about twenty-one and twenty, which seemed a more reasonable estimate.

Proceeding with the assumption of a birth year of 1830, then, led me to a baptism record dated 6 Jun 1830 for John Rudkin in Gosberton (with parents named as Henry and Sarah).

In retrospect, then, this suggests to me that John was much younger than his wife Elizabeth, but for any of several imaginable reasons his age was misreported on the census listings. I would find it quite likely that this small deception was put forward for his wife's benefit, so she would not appear to be an older unmarried daughter of her family being wedded to a young man of nineteen. It is even possible that she did not know John's true age.

There is an indexed death record that I believe belongs to John, dated from the second quarter of 1867, which gives his age as forty-two. This aligns with some notes I had found in some previous searches (comprised primarily of unsourced family trees and pedigrees online, including on Ancestry) that indicated that John died in the mid-1860s. Additionally, his youngest surviving son, George William Rudkin Sr., was counted as living with his paternal grandparents (Henry and Sarah Rudkin) in Gosberton in 1871, suggesting at least one of his parents had died by that point.

The fate and history of John's wife, Elizabeth, is not as well-known at this point. I have not found any record of her maiden name or parentage at this point. Interestingly, there is a census listing in 1871 for a widowed "Elizth Rudkin," age forty-seven, in Bracebridge, Lincolnshire Cty, occupied as a "charwoman" (a cleaning servant) and "inmate," with her birthplace given as "Gedney Dyke, Lincolnshire." That same woman is counted there again in the 1891 census, this time listed as charwoman and "patient" and with her birthplace now reported as "Fleet Fen, Lincolnshire." It seems quite possible that these records applies to our Elizabeth, but it should be noted that Bracebride is a fair distance from the area where she married and where her children were born.
