Narrative

Notes: Researching the family of Anna F. Stonebraker

Anna and husband Harry C. Johnston married in 1918; his eldest son, Douglas, was born in 1909, while their two daughters, Mabel and Frances, were each born after they married. In my initial assumptions for the family, I believed Douglas was born to a previous marriage of Harry's because of the large gap in years between his birth and his parents' marriage.

Ron Irick, who met Douglas and his family decades ago and knew them quite well, was able to correct my mistake. Anna was described to Ron as a very "free-spirited" woman who lived very independently and worked at offices at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base as a young woman. She and Harry did not marry until several years after the birth of their first child (Douglas), another unusual aspect for a family in the Midwest the early twentieth century. Douglas, then, was a full biological brother to his younger sisters Mabel and Frances, and there does not appear that there was any previous marriage for Harry as I had originally believed.

Douglas married in his mid-thirties, but divorced at some point (noted on his death certificate) and would live in his parents' house in his later years. He had a frequent companion, a widow (Mildred Ricketts) he had known since childhood, and the two would attend family functions together until their deaths.

Mabel, the middle sister, would marry Stanley McGinnis and have a single daughter (Carol Sue) who would give them several grandchildren.

Frances, the youngest child, would marry Paul Clapp. The two would move to California from Ohio in the 1950s and had a son, Douglas.
