Narrative

Note: Researching the family of Mary Taylor

I have encountered quite a few gaps in looking for records and documents for Mary and her family, which has led to some difficulty in confirming her fate. After the 1870 US Census listing for her parents' household, I had not found any confirmed record for her outside of the linked listing for her burial on the FindaGrave.com website, which connected her to her siblings and parents but without sources or additional information. This listing named her Mary (Taylor) Elwood, though a previous version of this listing named her Mary (Taylor) Stowell-Elwood.

With that lead, I was able to find the US Census listings for 1880 and 1900 for Illinois-born Frank Stowell; the first put him (and wife Mary) with his mother and two younger sisters in Dover, Bureau Cty, Illinois, while the second placed Frank and wife Mary with nineteen-year-old son Lynden in Kewanee, Henry Cty, Illinois. Frank appears to have died in 1902, with a burial listing in Prairie Repose Cemetery in Dover, and the only reference I have found to any children he may have had is Lynden.

As the burial listing for Mary gives her surname as Elwood, the next searches were for Mary (either Taylor or Stowell) to a spouse with the surname of Elwood - which brought me to a marriage record in 1908 for Mary Stowell to C.A. Elwood in Geneva, Fillmore Cty, Nebraska. The next four US Census listings for Mary place her with her husband Clarence A. Elwood first in Lynn Twp, Clay Cty, Nebraska, and later in Clay Center, Clay Cty. I have found no death record for Mary, nor a confirmed death date, and the listing for her on the FindaGrave.com website does not display a photo of her gravestone. Assuming the listing is accurate, it appears that Clarence survived Mary and had her sent back "home" to Dover to be buried. Clarence survived for a dozen more years, and is buried in Clay Centery Cemetery. I have not determined whether he was married previously, nor whether he may have had any children prior to marriage to Mary. It seems highly unlikely that the two of them had any children, as Mary was just days shy of her forty-eighth birthday when they married, and no children were present in any of their household's listings in the censuses that followed.

Returning to Mary's first marriage, the only child I have found born to her and Frank was Lynden, though the only time I find him living with his parents is the aforementioned 1900 US Census record. Chronologically after that, the next record I find for him is a marriage record (naming him Illinois-born Lyn John Stowell) on 23 Jul 1917 in Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara Cty, California, to the young widow Mae Esther (Howard) Painter, born in California. This marriage record does note that Lyn is divorced. Immediately following that is his WWI draft registration card in Los Angeles Cty, California (fourteen months later) where he named Mae Stowell as his nearest relative. After that, the next records I can find for Lyn are the 1930 and 1940 US Census records in Los Angeles, Los Angeles Cty, placing him with a Massachusetts-born wife Katherine F. Stowell. Following this record is his death record from early 1955.

I have not found any burial listing for Lyn, nor have I found any divorce records or further marriage records beyond the one he shares with Mae. It would appear her married at least three times, though I have not found confirmation of this. I have also not found any information as to whether Lyn had any children.
