Narrative

[Obituary for Mrs. Mary Hinklin, from the Marion Star, 7 Jan 1929, p7.]

[headline] AGED RESIDENT OF LA RUE SUCCUMBS
[2nd headline] Mrs. Mary Hinklin Is Claimed After Extended Illness; Rites Tuesday

LARUE, Jan. 7 - Mrs. Mary Amanda Hinklin, wife of George Hinklin, died at 5:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon at her home, following an extended illness of complications. Funeral services will be held at 11 o'clock Tuesday morning at the Baptist church, Reverend Merritt, officiating. Interment will be made in the LaRue cemetery.

Mrs. Hinklin was born June 14, 1853, in Big Island township, the daughter of William and Harriett Hoover. She was a life resident of Marion county and since her marriage to Mr. Hinklin Aug. 10, 1873, had resided in LaRue. Mrs. Hinklin was a member of the Baptist church.

Surviving with the husband are the following children: Mrs. Blanche C. White, Richwood; Howard A. Hinklin, Gary, Ind.; LeRoy H. and Dwight A. Hinklin, Toledo, and John Hinklin, Marion. One brother, William Hoover, DeCliff, also survives.

[Editing note: the obituary misspells her maiden name as "Hoover" rather than "Hover," and misstates her father's name - an understandable mistake, since he had died when she was only eight years old, more than sixty years prior. William was her younger brother's name.]

Narrative

Note: Parentage of Mary Amanda Hover

The only reference I have to the parents of Mary Amanda (Hoover) Hinklin is an unsourced note on FindaGrave.com, giving her parents' names as Reubin Hoover and Harriott Weight, married 23 Mar 1848 in Marion Cty, Ohio. I can find a marriage record for a Rubin Hoover and Harriett Weight with that date and location, but nothing that ties the two to Mary Amanda at this point.

Meanwhile, the original Reuben Hoover I'd attributed to her as her father - a Dr. Reuben C. Hoover - was a different man with a different family, and Mary is nowhere to be found in the census records for that man's household, even when she was a young enough child she should have been there were it the correct family. That family also lived primarily in another county (Greene Cty, Ohio), while there is a listing for a Ruben Hoover (misspelled as "Rewbin") in the 1850 US Census in Marion Cty, Ohio, with his wife Harriet and a daughter Sarah. This listing lacks Mary's presence as she wasn't born until 1853.

I've since removed the information I had for the previous Reuben C. Hoover as her father, and will need to do more research to find information about the correct Ruben Hoover.

ADDENDUM: I've discovered a great deal of information on Ruben's ancestry, and have updated the records accordingly. Interestingly, it would appear that the family name was typically "Hover," derived from the Dutch "Huber," and shows up in some records mistakenly as "Hoover."
The 1860 US Census record for Ruben's family includes the seven-year-old Mary; further searches on Ancestry.com (not cited here) also showed a Kansas State Census listing for 1865 that included only the parents Ruben and Harriet and children Mary and William.

Mary's mother, Harriett Waits, descended from a very extensively-documented line. Harriett was a descendant of the immigrant Adam Wächt, whose descendants bear the name in various anglicized forms such as Waits, Waites, Weight, and many others.
