Narrative

Note: The family of Oscar Weible

Despite the fact that both Oscar and his wife Ella each lived to be nearly ninety years old, there is a surprising lack of information on them and, to some extent, their children and grandchildren. There is also some difficulty in tracing the family through successive generations because of the large number of children (eight confirmed) and grandchildren (at least nineteen) and the broad migration taken by those later generations.

Oscar himself seems to have moved around a bit in his children's early years, including within Ohio and at some point to Missouri. His livelihood seems to have been somewhat shifting until his later years, as well, when he finally seemed to settle down to farming in La Grange Cty, Indiana. For some reason, in the last years of their marriage, Oscar and Ella seemed to be living apart - in the 1940 US Census, Oscar was counted in the household of his eldest son elsewhere in La Grange Cty, while the family farm seems to have been housing Ella and one of their youngest sons, Mckinley. Both Oscar and Ella gave their status as "married" in that census record. The two of them are buried in the same cemetery, but clearly have separate stones, suggesting they may not be buried together. I also cannot say whether they remained married in their last years, or whether they divorced.

Of their eight children, the information available varies greatly from very complete to highly incomplete:

- Oldest son Holland married and remained in La Grange Cty, Indiana; of his six children, I can only account for his three sons, while one of his daughters I cannot find after 1940 and the other two after 1920.

- Second son Otis married and relocated to Montana, where a large portion of his six children and their families remained.

- Third child (and oldest daughter) Grace appears to have married at least twice, and while I have found her death date and burial location, the records I have found have a gap of over thirty years, so I cannot confirm if she had any children. She and her husband moved to Chicago, Cook Cty, Illinois, and later to the suburbs.

- Fourth child Edna married a German immigrant and moved to Montana, where all three of her children and their families would reside.

- Fifth child Wayne would marry at least twice and had at least one daughter, but some gaps in the records I have found for him have kept me from forming more than a partial picture of his life. He also seems to have moved from state to state quite a bit, primarily in the northern and northwestern states. His one known daughter, Retha, was living with her grandparents Oscar and Ella after her parents' divorce, rather than living with either of them.

- Sixth child Mary was married and had three daughters; she and her daughters' families remained primarily in Indiana (barring the military career of her oldest daughter and son-in-law).

- Seventh child Mckinley seems to vanish after the 1940 US Census listing with his mother, other than being mentioned as a surviving sibling (and living in La Grange) in the obituaries for two of his older sisters at their deaths in early 1971. I do not have a confirmed birthdate for him, nor any information on whether he had children or was ever married.

- Youngest child Victor appears to have moved away from the La Grange area after the 1930 US Census record, but other than the references to him in his sisters' obituaries (as a surviving sibling, resident in Missouri), the only other reference I can find for him is a burial listing and his US Social Security Death Index record. I have no information on whether he ever married or had children.
