Narrative

[Marriage announcement for Ernst Nagel and Anna Lehmann, from the Juneau Telephone, 20 Oct 1893.]

NAGEL-LEHMANN - Mr. Ernst Nagel of Hustisford, and Miss Anna Lehmann, of Woodland, were married in the Evangelical Lutheran church at Woodland, Oct. 10, 1893, by Rev. Gottmannshausen.

Narrative

[Obituary for Ernst Nagel, from the Juneau Independent, 28 Jan 1944, p1.]

[headline] Aged Neosho Resident Passed Away Jan. 19

Neosho, Jan. 24 - The death of Ernst Nagel, 78, widely known farmer and resident of the Hustisford township since boyhood, was announced from his farm home at 4 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, January 19, following a stroke of apoplexy resulting from a blood clot of the brain. He had been ill for only two days.

The funeral on Saturday afternoon largely attended by relatives and friends, was held from the Zilisch funeral home in Hustisford, services being conducted by the Rev. Schaar of Woodland. Burial was in the Hustisford cemetery.

Born in Homburg [sic], Germany, July 26, 1865, Mr. Nagel was 16 years old when he came with his parents to the United States to make permanent settlement in Hustisford township where his entire life since that time was spent. His marriage to Miss Anna Lehmann was solemnized at Hustisford on October 10, 1893.

Mr. Nagel was well known as a successful farmer and during his entire married life operated his homestead farm in Hustisford township two miles west of Neosho. Mrs. Nagel preceded her husband in death February 26, 1942, and surviving are three sons three daughters. The children are Fred and Frank Nagel of the Town of Ashippun, Elsie (Mrs. Fred Hein) of Neosho, Robert Nagel at home, and Linda (Mrs. Ransom Endres) of Hartford. Sixteen grandchildren and one brother, William Nagel of Royal, Wis., also survive.

Narrative

Note: The birthplace of Ernst Nagel; pronounciation of the surname

While his obituary identifies his birthplace as "Homburg, Germany," he and his siblings were all christened or baptized in a church in the village Gressow, near the city of Wismar in Nordwestmecklenburg. (His parents were also married there, and at least one of his siblings is buried there as well.) Wismar was not a large city, and would not have been well-known to most of the English-speaking population around him in his life in Wisconsin. Hamburg, however, was a much more familiar city name to Americans, and was only eighty miles southwest of his birthplace. Hamburg was the family's point of departure when they left Germany for America, and it's possible they'd even lived in the area of the larger city for some time prior to their emigration, though I have not found any records to indicate whether this occurred.

It should be noted that the vast bulk of his descendants pronounce the surname as "Nah-gull," along the lines of the original German pronounciation. The lone exception is his grandson George, who after he returned from his time in the Navy was calling himself "Nay-gull," with a long "a" sound.

Narrative

Note: The descendants of Ernst Nagel

Ernst and his wife Anna had six children who lived to adulthood; of those, all but one (Frank) married. At the time of Ernst's death in early 1944, his obituary named all six of his children as survivors, and also noted that he was survived by sixteen grandchildren. Nine of those sixteen were born to his children Fred, Elsie, and Linda, who each had three children all born before 1937. The remaining seven were all the children of his third son, Robert, who would go on to have another five children between 1945 and 1953 - bringing the total number of Ernst's grandchildren to twenty-one.
